Hey Jeremy,
They think that is your truck!

Actually, that is Brian's truck. He is out in onw of those states on the east coast. I suspect he is still probably in the lead on HP from these 1st gens.

Carl

BTW, great video AND way to go Brian!!

Yeah, that truck has been floating around for a while.

First of all, I don't know where he gets off saying he also uses the thing as a work truck... especially with that huge turbo.

The only reason he didn't melt his pistons is because the DD dyno he ran on can be adjusted for more load to spool that pig.

Not to mention he couldn't make it 100 feet into california with that smoke.

But then again, who cares about california???

Don't get me wrong, I respect that power level, but it seems to be an unreliable way to go at it.

Old Smoky is making about 450 and his truck is twice as reliable (and probably half the manifold temps) of that big thing and is much more driveable.

The max HP for first gens is steadily climbing, and it won't stop soon. I must admit though, unless we run across some new stuff with these VEs, we won't get much past 500hp... I know mike has reworked his pump over to get the fueling he has now, and that is not for the average truck owner.

Just my $.02

lol...NOT MY TRUCK.

yeah agree about the unreliabilty with that hog of a turbo, among other things.

Still, quite a bit of power from the little pump that could.

Horsepower is horsepower. Who are we to say what is needed on HIS truck and what your opinion is of reliable? If we had one set way to modify these trucks, then 60% of the products we have now would have never came up. I agree, its not for the avg daily driver. But, who am I to say whats right and whats wrong? If the shoe fits, then by all means wear it.

Brian, good numbers. Not bad for some good ole hilljack enginineering

I never said he was wrong, just that he is going the wrong route if it is meant to be daily driver.

I also said I respect what he's doing.

But I disagree with the "horsepower is horepower" statement... there is usable horsepower, and dyno horsepower... it seems as though he just has dyno horsepower. Especially if you plan to use it as a real truck and tow trailers with it.

"First of all, I don't know where he gets off saying he also uses the thing as a work truck... especially with that huge turbo"

Depends on what kind of work he does. Still in doubt, why dont you email brian and set the record straight?

Especially if you plan to use it as a real truck and tow trailers with it.

So whats your point? Are you saying that a truck that tows a trailer is the only one that deserves to be called a "real truck"? I think alot of high hp guys on this board would tend to disagree.

"The only reason he didn't melt his pistons is because the DD dyno he ran on can be adjusted for more load to spool that pig."

You sure about that? I dont believe he melted a piston during the DHRA season last year where Karl and Brian split for 3rd division champions.

Yeah, I get worked up over things like this. Brian is a good guy and one heck of a wrench when it comes to diesels. Especially class 8's. He has also contributed alot of knowledge to me and many of the 1st gen owners. If Brian wanted to build a run of the mill 486hp truck, he has the knowledge to do so. Could it be that he wanted to take the road less traveled? Before we start throwing stuff out here lets get the facts straight and not chastise the individual just because you think it should have been done another way.

Does Brian post on this forum? I didn't think I had seen anything from him here.

My understanding is that yellow truck is full of tools and a daily driver, when it isn't going around the track . . .

If that video is really indicative of the dyno run, there is no way to judge what the low end torque & hp curves look like, because of turbo lag. To truly represent those curves you have to pull the engine rpms down into that range rather than measure it as the engine speed is accelerating.

Regardless, I for one would like to know more about what he has done to his truck.
