3 times a charm...w350 questions

I have been searching for a while, and have had some bad luck...

1. 1992w250 drove 110 miles on DC's word that it was clean, $8,000 had 4 junk recaps, mud and rust still all over it, a cracked cowl, absolutly no options, and finall a rotted out pass bedside. Boy was I ticked

2. body clean 1993 d250, won through ebay, $4,050 bucks, and owner not able to caugh up a title....Yeah go figure, why even sell. OR if you can get higher just end the auction.

Just found #3. 1992 w350 4wd dually, 200k for 8,995 clean truck no rust.

So here are a few questions. I know these engines are good....real good but is 200k too high of miles to start out with? i plan on doing some mods, and to drive this truck for as long as it will go, but i dont want something that is over the hump. I know these engines are good, and can get some miles. I guess im looking long term.

3.54 vs 4.10 Chances are it has a 4.10 How does MPG differ at say 70mph, 1700 rpm with 3.54 vs 70 mph 2100 rpm with a 4.10? Big difference?

Thanks for the help. If I bring this one home, ill be sure to loose the 21cm housing on the way home. Thats for sure.

#3 sounds like a winner---standard or auto? I'm closer to 60-63 at 1700 with my 3.54's. I did go through an injection pump, but it's origin was questionable, as was previous maintainance. I should roll 400,000 this fall and she's strong as an ox. With the availability getting less and less, I'd try to steal that truck as quick as I could. Get it home and make it your own. JMO.

I along with many others would say 200K miles is definately far from dead. 9 chances out of 10 you wont find alot even below 150K that are this old and look at some of the rigs that are being BOMBed around here. Just check and see that it was well mantained, there are no leaks and that things like brakes, rotors, bearings, etc aren't completely toast. When you're paying 9K for something like this, whether it's worth it or not, it's best to make sure you're getting what you pay for.

If it was reasonably well cared for 200 k doesn't concern me. As long as it starts quick and doesn't have a lot of blowby out the breather, chances are it's got another 200 k in it.

I can't say on the mileage difference. Mine gets mid 18's at 70.

BTW, its a 5spd (i dont want another auto truck ) I sure hope something turns up. I haul junk steel, cars, trucks, etc to the shredder for side $$. I sold my old truck (92,f-350 non turbo 7.3, 198k) because it was getting rough, and after helping other with their CTD, I wanted my own. (my 88 crown vic wont haul my 3,000 lb equipment trailer)

And now im getting more and more backed up, and having to refer quick hauls to a buddy but i dont want junk, because I wanna give it the Cummins high mile test. I know 4.10 will help pulling, but I want to get decent MPG too. I know it wont get as good as a reg cab d250 3.54 would, but if i can do my BOMBS and stay flirting with 18-20 highway Ill be happy-i drive 30 miles interstate to work

Dave you know the type of truck i used to have, it was a crew cab, painted yellow with a keystone on the side, and cold-patch all over it.

I don't think you'll need 4.10s plenty of low end tq

200k is nothing if kept up after, mine used to be NJ turnpike truck and for 8years it was never turned off except for maintence as per logs. now thats alot of hours. and except for a leaking rear seal and injection pump(changed before I got the truck) its A ok

Mine will roll 200,000 in the next month or so. Still runs like a champ, I wouldn't be too worried about 200k, as long as it has been taken care of.

While at Scheids yesterday I saw 3 first gen for sale lets just say 1 was what I would consider reasonable pricewise. But I would not be surprized if they sold the other 2 for the asking price the way these things just keep going up.

I'd have to agree that if you're not expecting to have to do a lot of grunt-start pulling, then go with the 3.54 for sure.

With some standard modding, you'll get plenty of reliable power with the mpg you're looking.

my first 92 had 222K on it , then I started Bombing it. It now has 288K and still pulling strong. My other one had 268K and Im starting to bomb it. it now has 279K. No problem with 200K

I have a 93 that I've had since it was new. The first thing I did after I got it home was to install an hour meter. The odometer says it has 172,000 miles on it, which it does, but the hour meter just turned 9500 hours. Multiply that by an average of 45 miles per hour, and the truck has 427,500 miles. Not a big deal for the Cummins, but it illustrates that what's on the odometer MIGHT not really be the actual 'mileage'.

My 91 W350 is just rolling 200K and going strong, hauls like a champ....
Sat morning I pulled two Hummers out of a ditch at the Armory....
Mine has no real mods, just the AF, and I am averaging between 19-22MPG mixed driving, hauling I get around 17-19....

I just picked mine up 2 weeks ago, with 240K. It was a very clean truck, and maintenance was well documented. I think I searched for a few months before finding this one on auto-trader.com

Mine was an easy sell. The truck was just too clean, not like a detail clean, just no oil leaks anywhere, except the steering box. Original owners son was selling it, he just picked up an 05 with the G56 6 speed.

Drove it 700 miles home, and it averaged 18.5 running 75 with the cruise on. Only mods were a slightly tweaked pump. Even has the factory tach option.

Keep searching, you may have to travel a ways to find a good clean one.
