24v Tappets on a Stock 12v Cam?

I'm in the process of rebuilding my engine, and i found a broken tappet. I've heard that 24v tappets can be used on an aftermarket cam because they have a wider surface area. What about on a stock cam? Or should i just buy stock 12v tappets? Thanks guys

Just for reference

Call up Zach Hamilton of Hamilton Cams. He would be one of the most helpful people in regards to valve train tech.

How did you manage that carnage? Too loose on valve adjustment and kick the push tube and brake the tappet?

A wider tappet will allow it to follow a more radical cam, where a narrower tappet would have it's edge run up the face of the lobe and wipe it out.

That's why a MOPAR can run a flat-tappet where a Chevy would need roller lifters to run on the same lobe.

A larger tappet face on the same cam won't hurt anything.

It's my understanding that Cummins went to the wider faced tappets (along with mating wider cam lobes) so as to help overcome the issues of the new low sulfur diesel.
Zach makes his cams with wide lobes and as a result, specifies the 24v tappets.

Thank you everyone for your help. Thats what I had been reading. I was just worried that the wide tappets on a stock cam would not work correctly.

Oh, and that carnage happened because of a stuck valve. The valve stuck, which in turn bent the push rod very badly, which then broke that tappet.

Alright so i just got the 24v tappets, and they are about 1/8" shorter than my 12v tappets. You guys still think they will be fine?

I have no personal experience but as I've read it you are just fine. Just set valve lash.

I would try them and after you set the lash slowly roll the motor over and look for coil bind in the springs.

24v lifters will work just fine with a stock/OEM 12v cam.

The shoulder appears shorter, but the point at which the pushrod sits on the lifter is almost identical to the OEM 12v lifter with both the 24v and CR tappets.
