1st gen radiator suggestions
Hello people,
I have an '89 ctd and I have a 2000 ps ic.
I am looking for advice on the best radiator to use with it.
I prefer the biggest one I can get in it but I don't want to have one custom made. I would like to know what other people have used other than stock. Any modifications or tweaks also.
Also I am looking at putting the ic inside between the rad support and the radiator so has anyone done that. I am considering that so I can have an electric fan in front of the condenser and one between the rad and engine.
I don't like what works, I like what works best AND overkill when I can afford it!
Regards,
R.Reno

I don't think many people have done what you want to do. You might try doing some searches of this forum, because I do recall reading about peoples' radiator projects before. On my '92 I never had to do anything to the radiator other than flush it out real good inside and out.
I don't know if it would work in a 1st gen truck, but I've read about a company called Griffen that makes aluminum radiators and intercoolers for the 2nd gen trucks. I would think if you can shoehorn it into your truck, it'd work really well.

The radiators in these that truck is not a crossflow type. Get a later IC 1st Gen water neck and a radiator from a 92-93 truck. That should help a little.
Why do you need a different radiator?

I put a generic summit aluminum radiator in mine. My truck was originally non intercooled. I added a second gen i/c, and a/c condenser(condenser in front) and it all fits behind the grille. I did extensive modifying to the core support to get it to fit. I also fabricated a shroud styled after some of the peterbilts I've worked on. I kept the mechanical fan, but made the shroud clearance about 1/4" from contact all around the outer diameter. This creates great pull for airflow by not allowing air to escape around the perimeter of the fan blade. The trick is, the shroud ring needs to be mounted to the engine, not the radiator. The ring is than joined to the radiator with a ring of flexible rubber. Even at idle there is tremendous air flow felt at the condeser. Definetely not an easy modification, but it really works well.
Oh, I also had to change the direction of the thermostat housing outlet. Cut, turn, and weld

I got a Griffen also p/n 1-55272X it was on sale. I measured my stock radiator and matched the dimensions and what I got is real close. All I have to do is have the mounting tabs fabed. I'm also going to use the derale dual 4000cfm fan for cooling There 2000cfm each. p/n 16928. I got both items from Summit racing.

Why would you want to put the I/C behind the radiator? You want the air to be as cold as possible, right? The fan's going to draw air across the radiator into the I/C.... doesn't make any sense to me.
