1st Gen Possible Purchase

1st Gen Possible Purchase-cummins2.jpg1st Gen Possible Purchase-cummins3.jpg1st Gen Possible Purchase-cummins-7.jpg1st Gen Possible Purchase-cummins-6.jpgHi everyone,

First time posting here. I am looking at a D350 first gen extended cab dually and just wondering if there are any key spots to keep an eye out for.

The roof corner is just flaky at this point and that is the worst side of the roof. The truck has 365000 miles, AC( most likely not working), PW, PL and is a 5 speed standard 2WD.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Rob

Front cab mounts and the rear frame by the fuel tank are two spots that are known to get rusty and soft first. Dually fenders are often cracked as well.
From the pictures I see it looks nice.

That roof rust is a little worrisome. Is there any evidence of bubbling more toward the center? They rust from the inside out usually.

As long as it runs good and has oil pressure the engine is fine. The trans is gonna be noisy, especially at low rpm in 4th. As long as it's just a growl/rattle and it shifts ok, it's normal.

wannadiesel-The center of the roof appears to be fine. I can ask about the tranny but I do know that it pops out of first gear. I have asked about a video of it starting up cold and idling and about the blowby test.

Well latest update for everyone. I have attached more photos as the gentleman has been sending me a pile of cab mounts, corners, interior etc. Please feel free to add your input. Overall I think it is in pretty good shape.

Is that a mechanical speedometer? It looks like it. It is also a reducer and reverser. My truck is almost the same except mine is an 89. That unit was missing and the dealer I bought it from couldn't figure out why the speedometer didn't work since he had connected the cable direct.

I was able to find one on the internet but there are speedometer shops that can make one up for you I'm sure.

is is a Getrag 360 trans? You can get a rebuilt one for about $1200.

Thanks for the input everyone. I am looking forward to getting it home and start working on it. I do believe that it is a Getrag 360 tranny. I want to do the usual fluid changes and preventative maintenance stuff.

I also have a photo of the options tag and would like to eventually get a break down in what the truck came with.

Faith- are you the resident internet guru on 1st gens?

Thanks,

Rob

Looks like it has after market air bags on the rear. Nice.

What part of the country is it coming from?

And yes, Faith was THE guru even way back when I joined.

Great to see that you are back on the forum. I've read quite a few of you're posts and much of the info in the sticky. Very useful and helpful information. It has been invaluable to me. Thanks!!

Compared to what I have seen in the rust belt (specifically central PA) that truck is really nice underneath. If you have some mechanical ability the G360 is supposed to be pretty easy to rebuild yourself. Not very complicated.
