Okay, would an electric radiator fan setup be a smart idea as well? -Would it free up any power, etc? -Thanks!

Freeing up power from a motor that will not run, huh....It makes no power right now so there is not much to free up.
You have bigger problems than making more power, like why doesn't your valve train move when you crank the motor. Once you get it running, most people find electric fans don't work well on their Cummins trucks. Open up your timing case and get to the bottom of this problem. You might very easily be looking for a replacement motor. |
Well, had some time so I started pulling things off . . . grill, support, intercooler, radiator (petcock works great on mine, just got a long funnel and 5 gallon bucket), and the other two to the side. Then bro said I should charge up the battery and see if there is any oil pressure. I did that but nope. Not sure how you're supposed to take off the fan but I took off three bolts from the fan itself and three 10mm bolts from the fan pulley so I could get an adjustable wrench in there. As I spin counterclockwise I feel tension, and hissing sounds. I guess it hits TDC eventually with the most pressure, and the pressure slowly releases. I can slip the pulley counterclockwise and keep cranking the motor this way. With the valve covers off, I see the 11th valve moving, but not sure about the others. Oh yeah, and the truck in in park!

Been cranking on it for several minutes and noticed the 8th valve moving as well. Small hissing noises (as if relieving pressure), a fluid-like noise as if small metal pieces/shards were moving under the head. The same noise when I was cranking it while dead on the side of the road. As if a smaaaaaall chain broke somewhere and was going around in a track for example. I have a friend coming to check it out tomorrow. I think I'll wait for him to look at it. He currently has two first-gens and perhaps had more before that. Keep ripping it apart further, or? So, my friend came over and we were able to pull the timing cover off. KDP is still in place. We thought at first the fourth valve was stuck, but after rough measuring with calipers, it's actually the bar under the rocker arm that looks stuck low. The rest of the arms are pretty tight/normal. So perhaps something wrong with the camshaft or worse? He said to access the side panel on drivers side and lift it up/release it. Everything else looks clean other than that . . . all the gears were spinning when I cranked he said, but not all of the valves; maybe a few. Thanks y'all!

The bar under the rocker arm? Don't know what you are talking about. Maybe some pictures would help.

I am currently chasing the cam is junk squirrel.
Whatever is going on the motor sounds pretty messed up and that electric radiator fan the OP was talking about is not going to free up much power out of it |
I would tend to agree with you on that and it is really hard to tell when it seems like every time it's starting from scratch again.
I dunno, I just have a totally different methodology for trouble shooting... |

If lobe is worn out and cam does need to be replaced, what else needs to be done/replaced? Pushrods

Check the oil for sparkles. |
