1st or 2nd generation

We have a 1990 Dodge Cummins 5spd regular cab 4x4 and a early 1998 (couple months before they offerded the H.O.) 5spd. Extended cab 4x4 dually and the 90' seems to have more torqe. The 90' has 210,000 miles and the 98' has 160,000 miles. Why does the 90' feel to pull better? Anyone else noticed a differince?

I'm not sure why your '90 feels better than the '98. Different gears or a turned up pump maybe. The '98 should have another 55 HP and 40 ft lb of torque. The '98 has a lot more potential, that's for sure. Poke around in the 2nd gen forum, you'll get that '98 pulling twice as hard as the ol' '90.

Hes right though, The 98 has lots of potential. If it was up to me I keep the 90 and put the 98 engine in the 90
I like the first gen because of its simplisity and easy to work on. After working on trucks all day I hate to have to come home to working on something that you have to stand on your head to work on

Your 98' is my dream diesel. I LOVE the 2nd gen extended can dually 4x4's. There sweet looking trucks. If you've never hears one with a 6" turbo back your missing out.

I would have bought a 2nd gen, but there wasnt any for $500 Maybe next time.

You don't have to stand on your head to work on the '90, but leaning over the fender to change the fuel pump can be a drag!

Don't feel bad, Denis. I did mine from the top, then found out (here, of course ) 2 weeks later that you could do it through the fenderwell.
