1992 Turbo?
Hey Everyone! ok my Uncle has a 1992 Ram 250 12V & he thinks it needs a new turbo it runs but if makes a different sound than it used to & the truck has no *****, & he drove a 1991 non intercooled & the thing screams compared to his truck, his truck was running fine & the turbo just started this, the odd thing to me is that he does not get any smoke, so I guess it's still building the boost just not working right, anyways I wanted to get you guys opinons on it & was wondering if he could use an HX35 on his truck from a 99 like my truck, will it bolt up? or what is available out there for a good turbo that wont break the bank.
I appreaciate any replies,
Thanks

The non intercooled trucks always seemed a little snappier to me. Could be lots of things causing a performance problem. I'd take a look at the AFC diaphragm to see if it has a hole in it. You could also reinstall the diaphragm without the spring that goes under it to test it. It should take off a lot faster, but if the overall power also goes up, then it may be the AFC. If it just smokes more with no overall power increase, then its a different problem.

Take the intake hose off the turbo and see if the blades are dirty and check for sloppy play. He may get some blow by that has reduced boost. If he doesn't plan on fuel upgrades, just have the turbo rebuilt and put on a 16cm housing. The housing will make it run closer to the earlier truck. P.S. tell him to get the gauges so he can monitor his turbo better after spending some bucks on it. Mine was $350 for a local Turbo shop to rebuild. Plus $150 for the housing. Tap the manifold when you get the turbo off. Just put a brass plug in if you have to save some more for gauges down the road.
Depends on the problem...
First off, pull the inlet hose off the compressor housing and see if there is visisble damage to the compressor wheel blades. Also check for side-to-side shaft play. It should be tight with very little play. Check in/out (thrust) play as well. If the wheels are rubbing the housings...then it needs a rebuild. Excessive shaft play/wheel damage calls for a rebuild.
Also check pull the downpipe and see if there is oil residue in the outlet flange of the turbine housing, if so, pull the turbo from the manifold and see if oil coming from your motor. If not from the motor, then its the turbine wheel ring. If the compressor housing is puching oil to the motor/intercooler, the compressor wheel/seal plate piston ring is bad. These are all very common problems among worn turbos or neglected turbos. We see new ones come in with slight and severe damage, as well as turbos with 200,000 miles.
We rebuild turbos all day long, and we come across the same symptoms in almost every case...
Good luck.

I think I have an extra turbo in my garage off my 92'. I took it off last year at 43,000 miles and put it in a plastic bag for storage. It has a 21 housing on it but there was no problem with it. PM me if you need it and i'll go a huntin.
