1990 getrag problems

It happened again. I'm driving along and I go from 3rd gear to 4th and the transmission is stuck between the two gears - I can't get it out of the two gears so this time I drive it to the transmission shop. The guru there says the the tower (the forks?) on these trannys wear out and he hasn't been able to get a hold of these parts because they have been discontinued.

my question to you is my buddy has a ford mines ZF 5 speed from a 1990 ford f350 and he says that guys use these trannys to drop the 12 valve cummins into the fords, has anyone done the opposite - dropped these trannys into the dodge - and If so how hard was it? Did it bolt up? do you need any adapters or different sized clutch/flywheel? or does the driveshaft need to be shortened? ect...

mine truck is the 1990 2wd version if that matters...

You will get much better response by asking your question here> https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...aysprune=&f=93

You're in the 1994-1998 section.

I know for sure that you will need an adapter plate from destroked and some way to run the speedo but im not sure on the other stuff. Im real interested in this swap because I have a rebuilt zf-5 that I would like to replace the getrag with.

The zf 5 probably won't hold up to the 6b engine in stock form let alone if its been juiced up. the nv4500 or nv5600 might be a better choice if you have to dump the getrag. Also with the ford trans there are a lot of adapting issues you will need to deal with like the flywheel, engine to trans adapter and more.

I would just upgrade to a Diesel NV4500 If you don't wanna put another getrag in it or rebuild it....Occasionally Top covers w/forks will show up on ebay.

is it true then that they are discontinued? The only reason I mention the ZF5 speed is that my buddy has one he is willing to give to me for free - but if it can't hold up to the 12V I might be forced to look somewhere else then..

I forgot about that. I think the early zf-5 is only rated for 350ft/lb,the later ones for the powerstrokes are good for around 450ft/lb

Check with zbag.com to see if they can help you with the Getrag parts you need.

brought it in to a tranny shop today - said that the gear that shifter "detent?" gear for 3-4 the 4th gear broke which is why my shifter went way beyond where its suppose to but I can still put it back to third and drive but dodge has discontinued parts for the top half of that tranny and zbag also confirms this as well as the shop I went to. So it looks like i might go with the ford-cummins conversion as their outta kalispell (only 3 hours away from where I live) and do the ZF5 swap as i have one for free - but its still a little bit of monkey around.
My question for you guys is does the next gen diesel tranny like the 94 rams to present - will they swap behind the cummins without doing the crazy hybrid swap? whats the reason for the swap anyways (the guts from one and the case from the other?) I'd really like just to pick up a used tranny and drop it in without all the hassle...

also to add - if I get a NV4500 - do I need to use the getrag bellhousing or do I use the one on the NV4500? and does the NV4500 have to be a 2wd because my truck is 2wd or can it also be the 4wd? and where the best place to get clutch and pressure plates?

anyone know how many ft-lbs of torque the getrag is rated for? and what she can take? i know many of us are probably putting 800 ft-lbs at it easily right?
