1989 ABS Hyraulic Unit

I'm Looking for a 1989 ABS Hydraulic Unit to have rebuilt. Would anyone have a old unit laying around the shop/garage?

edwinsmith 11-09-2016 01:17 AM

Would that be the dump valve in the back for the RWAL system? If so that's what's wrong with mine. I didn't know they were repairable.

A1-Cardone will reman the ABS Hyd Unit (Dump Vale); their part number for the '89 mode is 12-2014. If you choose to have it repaired, you must send it in thru a A1-Cardone vendor under the R&R program. Core unit has to repairable.

Mine resides in the scrap pile.

I have one somewhere in my garage. The problem is that I am in Mexico now and I am not sure that I am coming back. If I do, I'll look for it for you. I would have to eventually come back to liquidate all my stuff and sell my house. I might even take 20k for my Impala...Mark

I just looked on O'Reilly's web site and they show the price at $188.99.

I'm not sure just how valuable this system is. I've never been impressed with ABS. I figured that it just makes you able to keep your vehicle straight as you hit whatever you're going to hit anyway. I figure if it's to slick to get going then you should stay parked in your driveway.

I had an accident once when my ABS unit decided to pump my brakes when if I had locked my wheels I would have stopped shorter and not hit. This was on dry pavement.

I think that the RWAL valve in the back geta blamed for all of the problems, such as soft pedal, pedal all the way to the floor and RWAL warning light on, on the dash, but a lot of the time, it is actually poorly adjusted brake shoes. I believe that was actually my problem when I both replaced the valve and went as far as installing a disk brake system. NJTman has a real good thread on how to correctly adjust these brake shoes. I would do that before buying a new valve, of course, it doesn't help you if you don't have a valve at all. I will probably be home in December and can search for the one I have, which is probably good. I also think that O'Rielly's probably does not have any in stock and they will just send it to the rebuilders, my opinion...Mark

Maybe368, I think your right about the O'Reilly's comment. At least that's what I found at AutoZone and O'Reilly's, you have to use the R&R program. As for searching for your removed unit, thank you, but unless it's off of an 1989 D/W250 or 350, it will not do me any good! The 89's were the only year that used this part number! It's like looking for a needle in a haystack! I guess Dodge figured out there was an issue and changed to a different unit in the 90's.

If you are just going by part #, you may be in luck. I have seen where part numbers change, but the part doesn't. It may be something as simple as an extra bolt hole. I will try to find photos to see. I really have a hard time believing that there is a big difference between an '89 and a '90...Mark

Edit: Here is a pretty good description of the valve:

I have been trying to get people to send me their units, but they would rather throw them in the trash. Yes, they can be repaired if the only thing they need is new seals. I've done it.

I know what you mean, I never throw away an old part, especially when I am not sure that it was bad. I have come out smelling like a rose because of this. I put a rebuilt starter into the cummins and didn't take the original in for the core charge. Recently, the rebuilt unit failed and I had the original remanufactured. I love original parts, in most cases, you will never find a replacement as good. If the op doesn't need it, I'll be happy to send you mine, if I can find it...Mark

Not long ago I took my 2nd gen starter in for OH. The shop wanted to exchange it for a China unit. NO! But it's cheaper. NO, NO, NO!!!! They finally got the hint.

I am lucky, there is a rebuild shop named Copperstate Electric within a mile of me. They have been in business since the 30's or 40's and when the owner reired, the employees bought it. They are not real cheap, but they do the best reman jobs I have ever seen. I am a customer for life...Mark Edit: They were the only ones able to find a new stator and armature for a '66 porsche starter, everyone else all but laughed at me...
