won't shift when cold

won't shift when cold
1994 Ram 2500 4x4 automatic, stock.
On cold winter mornings, the transmission won't shift into overdrive; and if I use the overdrive shutoff to try to get the torque converter to lock up in third, it won't do that either.
When starting up in the cold I have to drive several miles (depending on how cold the weather is) before the transmission will shift into overdrive or lock the torque converter in third.
Do these trucks have some design feature that prevents shifting in the cold?

Mine does the same thing. I do believe they have a thermostat/sensor that keeps it from shifting into overdrive or lockup until the fluid has reached a certain temperature.

correct, OD and lockup is delayed until fluid temperature is at 70F. Here is another thread about this condition and how to fix it>
