wont run unless at 45* timing

Well long story short i put a newer motor in my truck, installed my pump on it (everything locked in), it wouldn't even start. So we advanced it a little bit (so we thought) and it ran great, but over the past i'd say 4 months or so, it has blown 4 head gaskets. So we assumed it had to be timing causing this. We got a timing kit and checked the timing found it was right at 45*. We then dropped her down to 16* and now all it does is pop and crack when you rev it up. Thought maybe to much fuel so i backed the plate and the afc all the way back, no difference at all..
It ran great at 45* but at 16* runs like crap? Any ideas?

Right timing chart for the pump? Is the engine at true TDC? Have you tried timing it to somewhere between 16 and 45?

motor has no data plate.
Was using the timing pin below the pump, gonna try the drop valve method tomorrow.
The pump is a 913 if it helps anyone.

16 degrees is 5.6mm then, yes? Whats your lift on 45 degrees? Drop valve would be best, but I can't see the timing pin being out that far.

yes that is what we were going by.... IIRC it was up around 12. or 13. something i don't remember i didn't figure it, just glanced at the figures
Thats gonna be our next attempt to see how it goes.
Like i said earlier, when we first installed the pump on this motor we locked the pump then locked the timing pin, installed and it wouldn't even attempt to start so i think something has to be off somewhere.

I don't have a timing kit but What I have always done is just pull the pump gear and rotate the engine by 1/4 until it runs the way you want. then if you have a kit check it and see what it says. I change timing so much on my truck due to cold starts and pulling season that I marked TDC on the balancer and a pointer on the bottom of the oil pan. then I marked where It runs best in the winter. Many engines run different even though they are the same cpl #'s its not a big deal if you are just running on the street but when it comes to pulling and trying to get all the HP you can I have never had 2 engines runs the same due to injectors wan injector washer thickness # of miles on the motor. how many rpms the gsk is which DV's the guy is running. it all makes a difference which all adds up. It can be 3* or 10*
Thats my .02$
