wont rev past 2100 & white smoke

just picked up a 96 180hp 12v auto. it was parked 2 years ago becuase of "fuel problem" was not runnng when i got it. took about 30 mins and i got it started.

it started right up with a fresh battery and removing the shut off solenoid (frozen).

now the thing is it wont rev past 2100rpms and it pops and pours white smoke at anything off idle. it starts right up and idle pretty much perfectly. just wont rev up.

timing slipped?

it could be timing and an injector issue

Possibly water/air in the fuel system.

Start with the basics.

I would drain the fuel/refill/prime the fuel system and swap out the fuel filter.

ESPECIALLY after sitting for (2) years.

What did the PO do to the truck right BEFORE it developed the "fuel" issue ?

Why did he give up on it and let it sit for (2) years ??

its not water or air in the fuel, cause it idles 100% perfect.

he was driving down the highway when it had this issue. the guy i got it from was not very intelligent and there isnt much for decent diesel mechanics around here. and the day after this issue occured he found a great deal on a 98 12v and bought that.

Sounds like timing

I would agree and look at the timing first

BigErksG2 10-11-2008 06:11 PM

timing or how cold is it out there when you did this? cold motor and revving leaves white smoke from unburnt fuel.

Did you get the fuel shut off lever all the way up?

Replace the overflow valve. It often causes the same issues.

alright today i set the timing to 15*. did not using the timing pin, i tightened intake/ exhaust valve down 2 turns on each and cranked the motor in each direction marked these 2 spots and measured half way in between.

go to start the truck and NOTHING, doesnt even try and start now. tore it all back down and checked the timing again and its identical to wear i set it. 4.7mm or .1850 inches.

now the only thing i didnt do is to check the timing before hand to see where it actually was, (obviously should have at this point) but i wanted to advance it anyways so i didnt bother.

so what gives??? this is not my first time timing a 12v and i've had 0 issues in the past.

thanks guys

How much did you move the gear?
If it was quite a bit I would suspect you have it 180° out.
