What replacement Alternator is suggested- 1994 Ram 2500
 

Well, I tried the search & got all kinds of posts, including nothing to do with alternators..I have about 234,000 miles on, what I think is still the original alternator..I want to do "Preventive maintenance" & replace the one in there now,& keep this as a spare. I could have the original rebuilt at a local shop for about $200.00 & he use's quality American parts. opt 2 is a complete aftermarket one; ebay, rockauto, etc...I have a Denso mfg. 120 amp...suggestions Please! Thanks!! 1994 Ram 2500 4x4 diesel. boss v-plow occasionally used..(please provide a link if you suggest some web site-thanks)

I purchased one from Napa autoparts. Price was comparable to RockAuto.

These are actually some of the most reliable alternators in the industry. If you freshen it up with a new brush set and a rectifier, you may get another couple hundred thousand out of it. Your rebuilder sounds pretty competent, that may be a decent way to go too. I find jobber remans to be hit-and-miss quality; you may get a good one, or maybe not.

Getting the OEM rebuilt is not a bad way to go but there is this:

Has anybody applied the KISS principle and went with a 1 wire alternator? Looks like an easy way to keep things less complicated by removing the ECM from the loop.

Thanks for the tips! Lots of good quality suggestions here! I'm leaning toward the local "Re-build" route, but still searching. Here is one for $150.00, and I have to believe it is a Chinese made one..just don't trust those Chinese made one; link here;

Hard to beat the products Larry B (foster truck) sells.
Any problem and he'll gladly give you a new one.

I second the LarryB comments, he doesn't sell based upon price.

I personally am running probably the same thing, but from NAPA.

It was new, and around the same price.

For your info, that same Alternator is used on a ton of different Chrysler products, so you might find a lower mileage unit on a gasser at the boneyard. One thing to watch is they don't like to set unused, so make sure you spin it before taking it to make sure the bearings aren't going.

I had my original rebuilt but it was only $90 but it was four years ago. Works great.

If you go this route and have the 47re transmission, the ECM will still need a (+)12v signal from any source to the "blue" wire within the small plug from the back of the alternator. The plug does not have to be connected to the alt. If not, the trans won't shift.
