Water pump fell off!

I had replaced tensioner, water pump and front seal prior to my 1500 mile towing trips. Just got my front tranny pump re-bushed and saw steam when I came home. Popped the hood and the water pump was gone! Don't know how far I drove without it, but it was at LEAST twenty miles! Top bolt had come out and bottom ear snapped off!

my old pump weeped all the water out when I was parked downhill on a steep slope, I also drove with almost zero water- no damage what so ever to the engine and the valve cover was so hot I couldn't touch it

Apparently no damage to mine either. Seems to run bettr than evr and no leaks!
PTL!

Joe, if you had it to do over again, would you still do the disk rear?

Best thing I have ever done to the truck- pedal feel is amazing and they don't lock up any faster or over work any more than the drums did. I do wish I would have found a D80 disk for the crazy loads I carry (12' camper + 29' enclosed bumper tow with a jeep wrangler 2 dirt bikes, genset, 30G of fuel, 55G barrel of water and a ton of hay inside) Only issue is that I have not been able to hook up my e-brake cables. Honestly though- im really pushing this 2nd gen hard....Iv even been told that it looks like its ready to break in half- even my old built Duramax I lost in the 2008 economy crash had a rough time pulling that load

I wouldn't to do without e-brakes, but I can't remember the last time I used them on any of my vehicles!

Most likely gasket from old pump stuck to block. Then you installed new pump over this with new gasket on pump. I have seen this happen before, always remember to check block surface before installing pump. Pump will always come off if this happens. As for no damage, you are very lucky. Cylinder wall scuffing usually happens due to pistons seizing in bore.

I've done that with an oil filter, but this was my failure to tighten the top bolt. It was behind a wire harness and i was going to get to it later and didn't. It's Loctited NOW!

Seems like with the water pump off the belt would slacken enough so the alternator wouldn't turn and the dash light would come on.
