wastegate trouble shooting
Is there a good way to see if your wastegate is leaking? If the actuator diaphram is shot then blocking the boost line would reveal this correct? An opinion Ive heard is at 130K the gate is typically spent. This is on a 95 5spd. Say it aint so
Are you seeing low boost?
The wastegate has a rather strong spring that pushes it closed, most often they fail/get stuck in the closed position.
Just block off the hose to the AFC and forget the wastegate.

I tried that, but must have done something wrong.I put a 5/16 bolt in the rubber hose, and then put a rubber cap on the fitting where the hose was connected. 2 days later I LOOKED, AND the rubber cap was gone. I guess the cap should have benn clamped? I s that what I should have done?
I blocked the boost line some time ago and didnt see any difference.Like most guys I used a spent 22 cal shell,I get about 15 psi full tilt on a stock motor. The guy telling me this made it sound as if it gets where it wont seat and you leak boost all the time. Ive never heard of this but any truth to it?

If you capped the fitting on the pump, then no.. The pressure comes from the intake manifold to the AFC housing and a cap wont' hold that pressure. If you want to put a bolt in the hose, pull the hose off of the fitting on the wastegate side under the valve cover plate. Or just go to a parts store and find some hose pinchers for heater hoses etc. and pinch the line.
Typically you won't gain alot of boost, but in the 2-4 psi mark at higher RPM levels with a stock plate. If you are adding some fuel, just be sure to keep the boost under the 35-40 mark or you may want to opt for the $25 boost elbow.

I have an actuator hooked up on mine but no boost reference line to it. I see about 26lbs of boost. When I did have it hooked up I only got about 18lbs of boost. Big difference for sure. But with your stock plate/AFC there may not be a huge difference. Move your stock plate and adjust your AFC I would bet you will see a big difference. It takes fuel to make more boost/power.
