(Very) Limited Slip Differential
 
Got a call from my daughter, who was turning the beast around in my driveway and dropped one tire off the edge onto some pine straw. Seems that tire is just spinning on the straw. Well I supposily have a limited slip differential but it sure isn't doing jack. I even had her partially apply the parking brake which had no effect. Did these LSD's ever work? [verymad]

My LSD works great and i have 227,000 miles on mine, but i do change the rear end oil every 50,000 miles and use synthetic oil and always make sure i add the additive for the limited slip to.

The clutches in the LSD do wear out and start to lose their aggresiveness, slowly making it a open diff. As well, what kind of oil do you have in the diff? How much LSD additive? I understand that (correct me DTR members) the synthetic oils are too slippery for the LSD. As a cheap experiment, drain the oil, add normal gear oil and do the same test. If it is too grabby, slowly add additive until it where you want it. If it is totally shot, you can install a new rebuild clutch kit. My origional LSD was exactly like yours, I installed a new one.

I have 180K on mine

and no issues. I do run synthetic oil in the diff and i did add the additive. last time i tried it, i dumped the clutch and hammered it and left two really pretty holes in the sand at the lease. So i know mine works quite well. Sorry that yours isnt workin..

I would say worn clutches, get a detroit or powertrax and be done with it :D

The last three trucks I had were like this. Pull the center carrier out, split it in half, and you might just find that the clutch packs aren't oriented correctly, like mine. from the factory mine was s/c/s/ccc/sss, or something like that, basically only one clutch for each drive axle. Just rearrange them and your all fixed up.
