Vacuum Line Connections
 

I just took out my starter and I found a vacuum line just hanging. It is in the area of the starter and is a small (1/4" ??) line with a rubber end on it. It is not too long so it must connect somewhere near the starter or possibly near the pump.

Does anyone know where this goes or have a diagram with the vacuum lines for one of these 12V's. I looked all over in that area and can't seem to find where it goes.

Does everything work inside the truck? What I mean is does the heater work as normal? How about the cruise control? Windshield washer fluid OK? This is about all I can think of. Is it hard plastic or soft rubber? Might be leftover from a repair, if you look behind the rubber molding/flange at the back of the hood (under hood where cowl meets) you lift that up and you will find a few rubber vacume lines and some tee's. Maybe left over from manufacture?

Cruise control is hard plastic on mine, so is turbo line, the only soft rubber lines I have are vacume lines under the rubber trim I just mentioned, the windshield washer fluid squirter lines, and then fuel lines up against the rear drivers side of the block (they are 3/8's and 5/16ths). Probably leftovers from something like that. Kevin

The line is hard plastic and might be closer to 3/16" in diameter. On the end it has large (maybe 1/2" - 3/4") rubber boot/connector that looks like it would slide onto a male fitting.

As far as I know everthing works on the truck, cruise, HVAC.. The line is not long enough to reach up to the cowl. It will only reach the bottom of the firewall, starter area or fuel filter area. I will check again later to see if it is stuck, maybe it will reach other areas.

I see you have a 4X4. The only one I know of in that direction would go to the transfer case. There should be a small tube toward the front of the case. The only other one would go to the front axle.

I've seen a plugged vacuum line in this area on '97s, figured it was just an unused line, maybe for a gasser?
If your heater, cruise and 4wd work don't worry about it.

Its the vacum breather for the transfer case. It doesn't hook to anything, the rubber thing on the end is a check valve. If I remember right the line should be green colored plastic.

I put the starter back in today and was looking again for somewhere to connect that vacuum line. Yes the rubber thingy on the end does look like a check valve now that you mentioned it. It's good to know what that line is for because it would have been bugging me forever and I would keep trying to find a place to plug it into. :D
