I was always under the notion that a manual driven nicely will always net better milage do to the fact that there is less power loss through the drivetrain.
tim.

I believe a manual would win stock truck vs stock truck in town. The reason i say the auto would be better for the interstate is that 4th gear in the auto's is pretty high. I can run about 75mph at 2k rpm's if i remember correctly. The overdrive ratio in the auto is 0.69:1 so it is pretty high. My truck was built for the interstate with 3:54's, and the auto In town with an auto with a good aftermarket EFFICIENT torque converter should be the same as a manual. Maybe better?? You dont lose boost on shifts, and you can freewheel more, but i dont know if that would help or hurt. Id say overall they would be pretty even in town, with the auto having a slight edge on the highway, but that is just my guess.

I think I understand the question now. When I adjusted my valves my fuel mileage went up about 2-3 mpg and the idle is a lot smoother. I also moved the plate back to about 3/4 forward and moved the AFC to about 3/4 forward at the same time. Now I have virtually no smoke except at WOT and still mannaged to put 299 hp to the ground.

That would make sense, mine has 3.54's and 285 tires and at 75mph it runs at about 2100-2150rpms i believe. The auto does have a bit taller gear, .69:1, where the nv4500 is .73:1,
Thanks for the info, tim.

MnTom, this is PERFECT!!!!! Exactly what I'm Looking for. It looks like you made mods, slid the plate full forward, noticed power but a drop in milage so you moved it back an got some milage back, correct? What are you getting for milage?

Well, You need to remember that this all took place about the same time fuel hit $3/gal. I went from about 16 mpg to about 19 mpg. I also have gone a little lighter on the throttle too, however, I still get going faster than when I am in my Jeep w/4.0 or Caravan w/3.3. Pulling two trailers with a CGVW of 17k+ I still manage to get 12 to 14 mpg. The best thing is taking off from a stoplight and out pulling most of the traffic without even trying! The look on some of their faces is great.
