Truck sat 2.5 years; how do I get air out of fuel system?

Hi,

My ‘96 2500 has been sitting for 2.5 years. I think that fuel is not getting to injector pump. I pushed the thumb pump 100s of times. What is the next step?

Thank You,Mike

Did you bleed the air out of the top of fuel filter? When pumping up the lift pump, you should here the overflow opening up with a bit of a squeak noise. That's when you know you have full fuel to the IP.

You are going to have to crack some injector lines if air got past the filter. Start with the easiest one to get at. Just loosen the nut, crank until fuel starts coming out. Tighten it back down go to the next one and do same as above. Two will usually do it I have never had to do more then three

Does the ignition key need to be in the run position to bleed the injector lines with the hand primer lever?

Don’t think that is going to make it though I have never tried it CRack the injector lines at the engine not the pump. Turn key on and crank the engine until fuel starts coming from loosened injector. Tighten it then move to next one. If you can get someone to help they can turn the key while you watch for fuel then holler at them to stop, you tighten that one loosen next one

Nope- the hand pump bleeds up to the injection pump, but does not have the pressure to get fuel through the delivery valves.
(Therefore it makes no difference if the shutdown solenoid is pulled up or not)
After you have bled the system from the tank up to the injection pump, and have heard the "squeal" of fuel going through the overflow valve on the IP when you pump the hand pump, you open 2-3 injector lines and crank the engine for about 5-10 seconds. There should be fuel at the opened lines, close them again, start with about 50% throttle.
It should catch quickly and run rough for a minute or two.
