Transmission noise going into drive
I just bought a 96 2500 4x4 and when I put the truck in drive it makes a loud noise. It sounds like a high pitched grind, almost a chirp. It does it exactley as I am shifting into drive and lasts maybe a second. Anyone know what this might be? I searched and couldn't find anyone having similar problems.
Another problem is the gear selector indicator is never in the right spot. It is always one spot too high. When it is in Drive the selector shows it is in neutral. Any ideas on this one?
The truck has 153,000 miles on it and I don't know if it has the original transmission or not.
Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin
Welcome to DTR. Is this your first diesel?
What is the idle speed when you shift from park or neutral? It may be the serpentine belt chirping. How much does the idle speed drop when you go into drive?

the linkage for your tranny is adjustable, and make sure your bushings on the linkage age good(top and bottom). My Dad only replaced one set of bushings and the top ones were also wore out. this would KICK HER INTO GEAR WHILE IDLING!!!!!!!! WOW, talk about fast reflexes for an old man
I would recomend a tranny shop for the adjustment; shouldn't be too much $ and they will check the bushings/get it right. Also, how is your fluid level? My old 79 Lil Red dodge chirps like that when it is low.

Fueling around,
This is my first diesel but my dad has owned two 7.3 PSDs and now has an 03 Cummins.
Idle speed is around 600-650 in neutral and when I shift to drive it doesn't drop much. I know 750-800 is where they are supposed to be in drive, I just haven't gotten around to turning it up yet. I don't think it is a serpentine belt chirp, it definitely sounds like it is coming from the transmission. It doesn't sound like the belt chirp on my dad's 03 when he shuts it down.
catnfool,
I havent looked at the linkage or bushings, I suppose I should get down there and see if any of them look or feel worn.
As for the fluid, it looks fresh and appears to be full.
Thanks for the suggestions.

Just an update. I am having more trans problems. Today while driving I lost 3rd and 4th gear. It won't shift out of 2nd. EDIT: It was also slipping when in drive, I had to drive the whole way home in 2. Do I need a new trans or could this just be a sensor or something?
Thanks
Thanks

Have you ever had the problem of the noise and the truck shutting down like the converter is locked up? I knew I had a bad u-joint in the front shaft and figured it was making the noise, but before I reinstalled the front shaft with all new joints I had to move the truck. I let it warm up for about 10 mins and jumped in and dropped it in to gear and it shut the truck down. Did it more then once. I shut it down and have not had a chance to look at it since. I am having neck surgery in the next few weeks and have not been able to do much, it took about 2 hours to get the front shft out and the about 4 hours to change the joints. Between my hands/grip being non exsistant and the double cardon joint....@%#$& If you find that noise.... let me know!!
