Which transmission

OK, a humbled apprentice is asking for help. I have a 1997 2500 4x4 TDC.
I have been having the standard transmission issues as most others. Slipping, lock/unlock, then in safety mode, stuck in 2nd gear. I read alot here, and was doing my trans filter/fluid change and inspection. Bought the trans filter kit for the 47RE, and started. Got to the point of reinstall the filter, and it didn't match what I took out. Gathered up both filters, took them to the parts guy, and was told the filter I removed was for a 47RH. Also there was no tube, or connection to the valve body except for the screws. I looked at my vin plate, and it clearly states 4sp auto. Can someone tell me whats going on? Could someone have installed a valve body from a 47RH in a 47RE??
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anything is possible, but I thought the RE and RH used same filter. To identify. RH only has overdrive and lockup solenoids, RE has those plus a governor solenoid.

All from the 727 to the 47RE used the same filter, including the RH.

What did change was in 1998 or so they went to a different style filter, either old had 3 bolts and the new had 2 or vice versa.

If you got one for a 97, then take it back and try one form say a 2000, should bolt right up.

These things are getting old and it is likely that you have a different year transmission.

Gentlemen, thank you for the response. PatDaly do you know if there is a sleeve or tube from the valve body to the filter? Each filter has a hole that lines up with one on the valve body, but there was nothing that actually connected the VB to the filter, except the 3 screws.
Gorms, thanks for the info on the electrical items. I have the RE, its got the 3 solenoids you mentioned.

Nope, just bolts on............ Not how I would have designed it, but it has been working well since 1957, so who am I to talk?
