transfer case broke

Has anyone else had any problems with the transfer case? I was pulling trailer with gross weight(truck/trailer) of 21,000 so I wasnt over loaded. It popped on the south side of atlanta and never noticed anything else until north side of atl bypass when I hit a bump in road...then bang bang bang!! Had to have totally rebuilt....and you know how much that cost on the road!!! $1800.00) The only other trouble Ive had is front end (fixed with new setup) and transmission (nv4500 went out same way bang then down!) I was loaded heavy when it went out(31,000-33,000lbs) I seldom pull a load over 20,000. Seems like I need a ford truck with a cummins!!!! Why cant dodge build a truck equal to motor? Is there anyway to Beef up the transfer case? I plan on putting in 6 speed if I have any more trouble with trans...I put in splined shaft and 5 gear nut this time. Any suggestions welcome! Im getting tired of breaking down on interstate! Rick

My 241 heavy duty let go last year on my truck. A snap ring that holds the gears in place let go and everything inside the case walked around. I guess I got a deal in having it rebuilt for less than a grand - R&R included. From what I recall, don't most pickups fun New Process Transfer cases? If so, then the only reason the "others" are seeing broken T-cases is that they don't have enough to pull that much.

Problem was labor cost...the guy paid 400,000 for his 3 bay garage with office and waiting room and that was OVER A STEEP HILL. Real Estate in big towns drive up overhead and we pay for it!! I could have got it done here for about 900-1000 dollars....but my luck it brakes down in atlanta! Rick:(

vssman makes a good point, you can't get much stronger than an NP241 HD nowadays. That snap ring helps to locate the output shaft fore and aft, and when that shaft moves it dislodges more junk inside. There is a kit somewhere that eliminates that snap ring, do a search on google for NV 241 snap ring kit.

You should fill out your signature so everyone can see what truck you have when you need help. It makes it a lot easier.

get a 241dhd transfer case or call haisley machine they charge $1600 for a rebuilt one and i think they do some work to them also to beef them up.
