timing question
timing question
Before tearing into a truck, the measurement for timing (4.8mm, 4.9mm ect.) is a measurement of what? My thought process is pushing toward the distance the plunger moves down from its highest point (thats when the fuel is injected right?) to where the engine is at TDC provided the engine is turned forward to reach TDC (that would be lowering the plunger in its downstroke after injecting fuel and before TDC on the engine right?) and the distance the plunger moves between its highest point and TDC of the engine is the number im looking for. Or am i wrong? I just want to get all the questions answered before i wish i asked them with a truck torn apart. Oh and how many ft-lbs on the retaining nut? 150?
0mm lift is on the base circle of the cam, the lowest point. Fuel is injected as the plunger comes up. The higher the lift, the further along it is in injecting fuel. If the plunger is coming down as you come to TDC, either your pump is WAY advanced, your TDC is wrong, or you are turning the engine the wrong way. TDC when both valves are closed, and bar the engine clockwise (you will be turning the barring tool counter clockwise if you are using it). Put the dial in the pump, turn it until it quits falling, zero it, then bring the pump to the lift you want. Pop the gear, then set the engine to TDC and tighten it up. Thats the coles notes version of it. I tighten the nut to 180 ft-lbs.
