Timing gear rattle?

168k
KDP has been fixed.
Completely went through everything on tranny.
Valve adjust less than 3k ago.
All fluids proper and fresh oil change (Rot. T 1540) a few hours ago.
No performance mods.
Everything performing as it should.

I have been able to detect a pretty discrete rattling sound with my engine when its cold, I have owned the truck for about 7k-8k miles and im pretty sure its always been there in that time. Its one of those sounds you detect because it isn't in sync with the rest of the engine sounds. It seems to disappear when the engine is truly warm (coolant, block and ALL the oil). I was changing the oil today and wanted to try and track it down... I found that it is coming from the front timing case as the sound distinctly came and went as I uncovered and covered (respectively) the oil fill tube. I didn't notice anything obviously wrong when I did KDP, but perhaps I will take a much closer look when I take it apart again due to a small leak!

Is this something I should worry about? Any idea what it could be? Thanks!

btw.... The other day I opened up the oil fill tube with the truck fully warm. There is significant gear noise... a ringing type sound. Does anyone else's gears sound like that?

I'm guessing when the KDP was tabbed the other bolts holding the case to the block were tightened (and Loc-tited), correct? I just went and listened to mine (it is cold) and there is a little gear noise with the oil fill cap removed but it is in synch with the engine RPM

Dunno, mine sounded really loud when the KDP popped the top of my case.

I wouldn't get real excited, if it was much, it would probably have let you know by now.

They were not removed but they were checked for torque. I have to go back in there eventually to put the cover gasket on. Mine makes a little noise when cold but when warm its much more noticeable and constant.
