I have a 98 12 V that is leaking oil badly, and has been for some time. I'm looking to sell it, and I'm having a hard time due to the mess of oil underneath it. It appears to be a cracked timing case cover, (KDP?) and has been "fixed" with rtv sealant by the previous owner. My question is, how difficult is it to replace the cracked cover, and how much is a new one? I've heard upwards of $200, but that seemed like alot for a cover. I am fairly mechanically inclined, but I don't want to spend alot of time/money just to get it ready to sell.

It isn't the cover, it's the timing CASE, and it's cast aluminum. The cover is merely a piece of cut and drilled sheet metal (steel).

Gotcha, hence the removal of the cam. Anyway, that looks to be way more involved than I would do. Has anybody had a shop do it, and what was the cost?

 

I remembered after my previous post that instead of pulling the cam when replacing the timing gear case that you can pull the cam gear - this will save you a little work. It takes a special puller to get it off and the gear has to be heated to press it back on (the cam has to be held in place when pressing the gear back on also). The total job takes upwards of 12 hours. I have never done it myself but have "helped" out ("here, get that wrench" - "here, put this back on while I do this", "etc.")
