timing advice needed

I pulled my injection pump to replace the tappet cover gasket.I got in a hurry and forgot to pin the pump with the timing pin.I have the motor on top dead center using the drop valve method,I plnned the pump later after I got it off.The pump is back on now.Is it ok to set the timing now?I have know idea what it was set at before.Like to set at at 15 degres or so.It has a number 10 fuel plate set close to the middle. The truck ran good before and got good mileage, but it smoked a lot.The truck is a 98 12 valve 4" exhaust everything else stock as far as i know. Thanks Robert

Robert if you know the TDC then go by the timing that the pump was set at, your 215 pump should be 13.5! Do the math Balancer x pie divided by 360. Example 9.25 x 3.1416 divided by 360, take that number and X that by what ever difference you want to make and back the motor up that distance.....3 degrees would be 1/4 inch, so back the motor up a 1/4 inch before you lock it down.

Keep in mind on 215's to put the new lock wash and nut on and tighten slightly 30-40 lbs before you pull the pin out, that will keep it it from moving. Pull the pin and T/Q per spec.

This and AFC tuning might still be in here from me from like a decade ago, not real sure! AFC tuning is likely your smoke issue.

That is what I needed to know.I was worried that I screwed up when I didnt pin the pump when I took it off.I have studied the timing procedures and have the tools. But I think your way might be better, just roll the motor 1/4" and be done. Thanks I probably will have more ?s later .....Robert
