Timing?
Timing?
Anybody have any ideas on the best way to bump up the timing a little bit without the gauge or light? I know nomatter what it will be kinda blind and i dont have the money to have it done so the gauge ect is out of the question. I just figured maybe somebody knew the best way to do it without that stuff. I know it is not a great idea but i still want to do it.
If you are set on doing it without the proper gauges you had best be hoping you are lucky.
One way to know how much you moved the timing is to use a cam degree wheel on the crank. Find TDC using the dropped valve method, note where the pointer is on the degree wheel, pop the pump gear, rotate the crank to the adjusted degree, then re-install the gear, torquing appropriately.
Unfortunately, this does not let you know if your timing has slipped so you really will not know exactly where you are at when you finish. I would suggest that you do not do this method unless you have no option and it is absolutely necessary. You risk much by over-advancing the timing - maybe even causing engine failure.
Good luck, hope it works out for you.

I may just wait for now my friend has the gauge kit well i guess you can say friend one of those deals where i spend my whole day helping him out then when i need something minor " oh i would but" kinda things . Alwell.
But i dont see why you could time the pump independetly from the motor with the little timing thing on the back og the pump. Not on the gear housing but on the pump.

The only timing adjustment is the gear, there is nothing on the pump.
Like Red says doing it without the proper tools is risky, you don't have any idea where the timing is set right now, it could already be at 17° and you could bump up into the 20s.

I don't mean you can change the timing on the pump but i guarantee you can reset it to that factoy timing within the pump on the bottom side take out the plug like and turn the pump until the little finger alignes in the hole then slide in the plastic keeper. Thats what i was talking about i KNOW you cant CHANGE the timing within the pump that wasn't what i was talking about i understand most all the in and out of the CTD i was just wandering if there were any tricks to timing without the the gauge. Because i know how many other things "REQUIRES" the special tool that has been done 1000 times without it. I just decided to wait on the timing for now till i can get the dial indicater but thanks for all the posts.
Oh yea, unless it has jumped i know where it is it is at 12.5* or 12* i forgot and i dont feel like going outside and looking. But i set the pump back to stock location after i replaced the timing housing. That is what the cummins tech told me to do.
No, the only way to reset the timing is to remove the gear. If you push in the timing pins and you are at TDC it is at the stock setting.
If you aren't at TDC with the pins in you're not at stock but will have no idea whatsoever where your timing is.

I am not sure what "PIN(S)" you are talking about if you are talking about the timing pin on the back of the gear housing and the timing pin that is actually on the pump both pushed in i would like to know how you would not be a TDC. I mean if the timing pin on the back of the timing housing is in is it not at TDC? Because i am sure it is.
Now with it at TDC with the pin on the back of the housing if you time the pump with it own timing pin how would you not know where you are. You are at stock location. Obviously if you time thie pump to stock location without the motor at TDC you aren't going to know where you are is that what your talkimng about?

It is hard to see but that is the timing pin i am talking about.
If i am wrong somewhere please correct i cant get enough of learning about these trucks.
