Throttle Position Switch

I know this is in the archives cause I found several references to it. However, this is a slightly different question.
I have all the symptoms , hanging shifts, lock/unlock etc.

Is it worth it to try cleaning the switch or is it just better to replace and have it done with?

Thanks, Bill

You can clean the TPS ... but it will only get you along enough to save your $$ for a new one ...

Re:Throttle Position Switch

mine did the same...... drove me !@#$%^&* crazy.
What I did was pull the thing off and with a very small jewelers flat screwdriver I scraped away at the epoxy seam until it was all gone then I carefully pried the lid open to expose the electrical stuff. I then applied electrical contact cleaner very liberally into the contact part twisted the actuator part about twenty times to get the cleaner worked in and then drained the cleaner out, wiped the exterior dry(not the interior) and then re-capped it and sealed it up with high heat silicone. It hasn't given me a problem in over a year.

Re:Throttle Position Switch

Have been looking for info on tps problems and just found this forum. I have a 95 and every year since 98 I have had to replace this switch. I have taken it to the dealer and to other service centers where I was told I had a broken wire in the harness and they replaced it. Ran OK for a few months and I am back to having problems, although they sound like a different type of problem. Mainly at highway speeds the tack will jump 200rmp and the truck will slow down. This happens for a few seconds to a few minutes then corrects itself. Once it happens the first time that trip it will keep doing this every few seconds to minutes for the rest of the trip. This is getting to be an expensive and frustrating problem.

PH45,
It's the same problem, I think. What you're getting is the TPS telling the converter to unlock then lock up again but it won't hold. Mine does that too but I'm also getting hanging shifts with it.
Called Cummins and got told it was a Dodge part. Called a pretty good Dodge dealer and got told it was a Cummins part. I located a TPS listing through NAPA so I'll be putting a new switch in this week.
Don't understand what keeps taking yours out every year unless it's receiving too high voltage.

Where is the cheapest place to get a tps sensor?

Let us know if the NAPA TPS works and if it does what part number it is....I have been spraying mine with contact cleaner for the last year to nurse it thru until it fails....I am sure a NAPA TPS will be cheaper then Dodge

Just ordered one from carquest list price is 52.00 jobber is 32.00 I thought that was real reasonable.

Re:Throttle Position Switch

Does the TPS just control convertor lock up and unlock in the 94 and 95? I was under the impression that it had nothing to do with the tranny shifting. Is this correct?

Re:Throttle Position Switch

TPS has input on when the OD gets applied, as well as converter locking.

Re:Throttle Position Switch

Just a little info for you'll, on my truck the TPS voltage was out to lunch....like 1.5 volts and O/D and lock would happen fine but when you let off the converter would stay locked until it got another signal from the brakes, there is a balance in the voltage and 1.0 volts seems to act the best, slightly lower or higher the converter unlocks too easy in traffic using light throttle.

Re:Throttle Position Switch

I just put another TPS in from MAPA $166. It was ok for three days, now everytime I hit a bump in the road it kicks out. Now I'm starting to think broken wire, but also think I should have voltage checked to see if that might help some.
