Temperature Gauge Stopped working
Recently my factory temperature gauge died. For a while it would bonuce from the lower limit peg to the correct temp very quickly back and forth like there was a loose connection somewhere. I have checked every connection I can find and nothing seems to help. does anyone know how many components are involved in making the gauge work? is it just a sensor and a gauge, or is there a computer involved? any help on where to start would be appreciated!
Truck is a 97 12 valve. |
I'd start by changing the sensor, and go from there.

Unhook the temperature plug, it is located at the back of the top drivers side of the block, near the firewall. Clean this connection and put some dielectric on it. Put it back on good, and check to see if it works. I will bet that it works.

If it doesnt, change the sending unit/sensor. It's not in a REAL handy place, but not bad. I used a wrench to get it broken loose, then a small crescent to remove.

It's most likely the sending unit. I replaced mine a month ago and I have to say .. it's a PITA. It's hard to locate (firewall side of the head) and I couldn't brake it loose with a standard 3/8 ratchet so I had to postion the breaker bar underneath the car. Get a big bucket because alot of coolant comes out.

I have that same problem, mine quit working for a couple of days to all of a sudden working again. Cin

Youre not alone. Mine is doing the exact same thing.
Knowing where the temp sending unit is has kept me from being too excited about fixing it just yet. Rich. |
DieselDaze, your all not alone.

Nope, definitely not alone. Mine doesn't work either.
