T&R Overdrive

Steering has some slack, I'm thinking this is going to require a new steering box. Is there a fix short of this that works or do I go ahead and bite the bullet and replace it.?

You can tighten up an adjustment screw, IIRC its a 3/16 Allen head with a check nut on top of the box. Go in small- 1/8th turn increments. If the steering gets notchy back it off a little.

Make sure all other components are tight, tie rods/ball joints/track bar/steering shaft as well. Steering brace did a lot for mine once everything else was done.
