Starts and then dies once

The last few weeks when I start my truck it will bust off fine run for 30-45 seconds and then die. The only thing I have been able to do is use the manual pump on the transfer pump. Pump it 30 times or so and then it will crank and run the rest of the day. I can drive to work after getting it startedand let it sit 8 hours and will start with no problem. Let it sit over night and every morning it does the same thing. It doesn't seem to matter if it is cold outsdie or not. this is on a 95 model. Any suggestions.

You have a small air leak some were. My 96 did the same thing. Check the fuel return line (behind the fuel injection pump) they get brittle and leak. My problem was the water probe in the bottom of the fuel filter it was sucking air in there. Also check the banjo's on top of the fuel filter. More or less fix any were you have a fuel leak.

Yep, my guess in fuel lines. I bet you park on an incline while at home and level while at work. Or maybe it's just 8 hours is not enough to let that much air in and at home 12 to 16 hours is.

Anyways, it's a good idea to replace the hoses with a good diesel rated fuel hose anyways, unless you have changed them in the past year or two.

Hopefully it's the hoses, if not, you have to play detective. Another common leak spot (besides what injector jack mentioned) is the fuel heater where the wires enter. Common place for leaks. The heater is located at the prefilter housing. Good luck, Kevin

Another question. I cannot find any signs of any diesel leakage any where. Could the check valve in the transfer pump be leaking back? Would there be enough fuel left upstream to run as long as it does? Also what would be the best way to troubleshoot bad lines or check valve?

You may not see a dripping leak. Check hoses for dampness or fuel film spot/spots. I would replace the hoses if they show signs of great maturity.

dalton 4 is right you may not see any drips look for damp spots. Tou good also use a vacum pump to pull down the fuel line. But you have to brake the system down into sections a nd plug the lines it is a lot of work!

My truck started hard and smoked quite a bit. I replaced the fuel lines and it wokred for awhile then went back to hard starting again. I changed my fuel filter and didnt find anything suspect but it cured it. starts right up now no missing no smoke. My advive would be to try the simple easy stuff first.

Well the first thing I did was to go ahead and replace the fuel filter and a couple of the rubber fuel lines there by the filter. I change the fuel filter every other oil change but felt I might need to do it with this problem. Problem solved.

Got diesel, fill out your profile so we know what you drive. I have a 97 and my fuel filter uses the aluminum cannister with the "drop in filter". I noticed if I do not push that filter in just right while replacing, there is a small O ring that will get pinched and cause what you are describing.

If you don't mind me saying, your probably changing your fuel filters faster than you need to. About every 20,000 is good unless you use "questionable fuel". Man save that money for the BOMBing fund.

Glad to hear it fixed, Kevin
