starting crank time??

So when i had my first gen engine in the truck that thing would be an immediate start almost didn't even hear the starter crank. My new 215 pumped engine turns over a little more than i think it should by that i mean the starter cranks a revolution or two then fires its not stumbley or anything when fired up just cranks over a bit.Is this normal.

That's what mine does. It's a '95 with a Cal. pump.

Yep, sounds normal. Nothing in the world seems to start as quick as a first gen. I always give a 2nd gen a tiny bit of throttle while cranking to help it fire faster. If the idle speed has fallen off it will aggravate the condition too. It might be worth a check.

If your idle is in a good place, just tap the throttle when you crank and it'll fire right up. IIRC, VE's go WOT when cranking. P-pumps have an higher starting quantity of fuel vs. idling, but tapping the throttle gives it that little extra to get going quicker.

My idle is in a good spot, some one had mentioned that the overflow valve may be a cause. Its not a horrible thing by no means just seemed funny.

The shutoff solenoid is also part of the timing equation (along with what Tate said about WOT start) With the VE pump the fuel solenoid opens on ign before you hit the starter. The P Pump needs the starter to engage before it pulls the lever.

This is odd. Granted I give my truck a bit of fuel to start (it turns over quite a bit otherwise), but it fires on 1st piston stroke.

I don't give it any throttle, even when it's 30 degrees outside. I just wait for the grid heater to shut off. My truck starts right up, seems the starter barley engages before the truck is running.

I've found if you want an instant start it's a simple choice between giving it a little throttle or increasing the idle.
Seems like many people are spoiled by modern vehicles that involve no thinking but the 12 valve injection pump is WWII technology that doesn't adjust via computer into a start mode.
I prefer thinking for myself rather than letting a computer do it for me, that's why I own 12 valves.
