Hold on a minute guys, it's his money and time. What a guy decides to do is his call not anyone elses. I replace worn parts also, but when I don't want to fool with it I replace the whole thing. A starter for example is only going to start so many times before it is worn out. You can take the bandaid approach and patch it togeather only to be stuck somewhere when it fails, and it WILL fail. Replacing it with a rebuilt one before it fails is not a bad idea if you must have reliable transportation.

In my line of work, time is money. If my truck does not start on a sunday morning at 5 Am I could be subject to loosing over $1000 in lost sales. So, I buy new. Thats just me.

i'd go for the rebuild kit to replace the contacts. it's called ROUTINE MAINTENANCE. you don't have to get new tires when yours are low on air, change the axles when you change the gear oil. it's not going to make the starter a sure failure if you put new contacts in. the rest of the starter is pretty dang stout and just doesn't wear out/break anywhere near as often as the contacts do. inspect the gear, if it's okay, the bearings/bushings are okay. if it fails as soon as 30,000 miles(which probably won't) the less than $30 rebuild more than paid for itself.

BTW, i got my vacuum pump drive gear and seal from fixinrams.com, great guy to deal with and took the time to talk to me on the phone. I'm glad I did business with him.

You must have one of those new hybrids that start on gas and convert to diesel once you get going. Does it use the gas or diesel when not underload? I am just courious.

Now that you mention it I used to have an International track layer tractor that started on gas with spark plugs and all, flip a lever and it switched to diesel.
Had a glass Mason jar for the gasoline tank.
Good tractor, always started, wish I still had it.

I know someone that has a Farmall like that. I think it is a 300 or something. He uses it to pull with and that thing will really smoke when you switch it over from gas to diesel.
