Starter Contacts?

The truck is the No 2 in my signature... 96 4x4 manual transmission.

The truck had been running fine this morning and I returned to the house. I went to start it again and it started up and I heard what sounded like a loud carpet vacuum cleaner running under the hood in addition to the sound of the engine.

I sat for 10 seconds trying to figure out what was going on and then tried turning the key off. I turned the key off but the engine continued to run with the same sound continuing from under the hood. I switched the key back on (without turning the key all the way to activate the starter). About 20 seconds later the 'vacuum cleaner' noise stopped and all I heard was the normal engine noise. I turned the key off and the engine shut off.

I sat there puzzling over this for a minute or two and then tried starting the engine again. It started normally and ran fine. I went out and drove it on a few errands. The engine stopped and started fine without problems.

Any ideas???

cud be a bad starter or even a sticky starter relay. you wud need to duplicate the problem again and pull the relay to if that changed anything. if it quit when u pulled the relay good bet its the relay if not then definitely ur starter

Check out fostertruck.com pretty sure you had stuck starter contacts.... It will only get worse.

That sound you heard was your starter staying engaged.

Take care of it soon even if it doesn't act up again.
If the contacts stick it can toast your pricey shutdown solenoid, melt wires and even start a fire.
