I'm curious as well (I assume it would be in the same location on my '98 12v). All I know is:

- I have completely removed my tranny and transfer case, and it is not there.

- When I spin the rear wheels in 2wd the speedo still shows my actual speed, not the wheel speed.

Makes me wonder if it triggers off of one of the front wheels or something.

It's on the t-case on a 4wd, tranny on a 2wd.
The VSS is available aftermarket at most autoparts stores.

Must be different on mine. All there were were vacuum connections on my t-case. Also, if it were there it wouldn't explain why I can spin my rear wheels and the speedo doesn't rise.

The '98s are whole different animals than the rest of the 12 valves.
Not sure where it is on a '98, possibly on the rear differential?

on the 4x4 there is one in the transfer case and one in the rear axle.

The 2x4 should have one it tranny and there should still be one in the rear axle I think anyway. I would say the one in the rear axle is bad.
Do you have abs and/or overdrive lights on?

I'm pretty sure the one in the back is just for the ABS.

It has to be electrical as there isn't a cable running up to the dash
