Source of Blue when cold engine?
Hello,
I have quite a cloud of blue from the exhaust for about 3 minutes after a cold start. I can really see it in the side mirror when I start out. Should I get a compression test to tell me what is what? What should the compression be at?
Did not see any reference to testing the compression on site.
Finally, are valve guides a big job to replace as it could be them too.
The engine has "Alot" of power to me anyways, especially when on the highway. Step down and "Roars to Life".
My first Diesel truck.
No Blue after 3-4 minutes of run time.
Thanks for comments/help in advance.

Blue smoke (or sometimes white) from a cold engine is simply unburnt fuel due to not enough temperature in the cylinders for complete combustion. Nothing to worry about-enjoy your Cummins
Hi G1625S,
Well maybe I am running too rich then as it really is kinda embarassing when I head off in the AM I mean quite Alot of Blue, being my first cummins and all I have no reference point but I think it is excessive but been wrong b4.
Thanks for the input.

Nah, you're good. Every 12v I've owned will fog out two lanes easily when cold. Your timing might be somewhat retarded, which does contribute to clod weather smoke-when was the timing last checked?
Different motor for me - you know - over valved and all! Same thing though, lots of fog at colder temps. No big deal - that's just the way she is. Runs diesel awesome when fully warmed up!
Cheers!

Hi G1625S,
I will have to get the timing checked. I have read 16-16.5 is good for more power, which is always good. I thought b4 that being a motor with 300,000 miles something was worn out but now I see other ppl with similar smoking when ice cold out. I am not able to plug in as in apt.
So in the summer I should see less or no blue?
Thanks for the input everyone.

Some good fuel additives can help in that department, but most times its timing, fuel heater, fuel pressure related. The fuel filters should be fresh and also the overflow valve may be getting weak and lowering the feed pressure to the pump.
