smoky start..???
k when i bought this truck the guy had to bleed the pump every time and i had to put the pedal to the floor.he said he replaced the lines and it looks like he did i just dont know how long ago.i bought it and parked it at a buddys carlot.i went there tonite and i didnt have to bleed the pump i just had the pedal to the floor and then it finally started.i blew lots and lots of white smoke for a while and i had to keep on the gas a lil while to keep it from dieing then i could let off and it would seem to idle fine.i go drive it around and then park it and shut it off but then i tried to start it again and almost everytime i would have to tap the gas pedal and then it would kick over. if there is anything that u guys can help me with that would be great and much appreciated.i really dont know to much about diesels yet but im learning. thanks much travis
It sounds like you have an air leak to me combined maybe with the idle being too low. Air leaks will cause more of a headache the longer the truck sits so if you aren't having too much trouble restarting immediately but only after longer periods, then that is it. The reason that I state your idle is probably too low is that you have to use a little throttle to start the engine when warm(I take it that it fires quickly if you do this?) Your idle should be at 850 with the AC on and the engine warm.
The usual places where air leaks occur are the fuel lines and the fuel heater. Additionally, if the fuel filter was improperly installed(many people accidently double up the inside o-ring) that can cause problems. There are other places that leaks can occur but those are the most common.

mine is a 250 dually flatbed
...by the way does sound like the idle is to low and air in the fuel. Mine didn't have a starting problem just smokey when it sat over night. Turned out my fuel pump had a leak... replaced and it ran like a champ no white smokey start ups.
