smoke question
smoke question
i have a 96 12v and it never blows black smoke even after i moved fuel plate forward but it runs fine other than a lil white smoke on startup it backfires a lil bit when u accelerate hard after starting and my engine temp moves alot doesnt stay steady like i think it should anyone know if this is a timing prob? or maybe injectors?
Id say your timing has slipped..

mighty fine truck you have, but then again i might be a bit biased on years he he he he he... anyways please fill in your sig to let us know what vehicle you drive.. It will also facilitate us in helping you out. Anyways. whats the mileage on the truck? i do not think it could be the injectors cause if thats the case at higher timing it would backfire too, so i feel it is likely the timing got low.. I have never had a problem with the injectors, but i do use a diesel fuel addative every other thank.. Berrymans diesel fuel treatment.. its sold round here locally and works well. I have not tinkered with my timing.. but due to the fuel system being pretty relaible id say its ur timing.. get it checked..

Starwheel
ok... that is simple to locate.. i wish i had my camera.. but on the drivers side, look for the lil hex key dealy behind the AFC houseing. OK the afc housing is where the fuel plate goes.. If your truck is stock and is fast.. it much be casue of the fuel plate full forward.. it adds about 30 hp or so.. DO you have any gauges to monitor this? id get them asap if you dont.. The starwheel... is under that hex dealy.. remove it and you will see a lil wheel.. Loosen it up all the way and you will have killer low end and much more rapid boost down low then it in the stock or about halfway position.. If you tighten it you will have less smoke, and you will have slower spool up.. try that.. sorry i cannot provide an image.. but its behind the afc housin.. have fun

thx tx i found star wheel im gonna time my motor tuesday and see if thats my no smoke problem got a freind to help me do it i dont know what my ets are but if ya wanna know ho fast my truck is i ran a 99 psd last night he has a 140hp box and he beat me by about 5 feet only cuz he jumped off the line b4 we was flagged i hate cheater ford boyz but everyone seen it so he got ragged pretty bad thx again for the info
The star wheel is located under aplug that has a hole in it for I believe an 8mm allen wrench, pull the plug out and you will see the star wheel, Take a small flathead screwdriver and turn the wheel towards the motor, which will screw the wheel towards the front of the motor, do this in small increments, until you get the smoke you are looking for. The missing or backfiring you are talking about usually happens when the engine is still cold. Let it warm up before going over 2000rpm and that usually fixes that problem. The temp going up nad down is normal for these trucks, because of the large radiator.
