Slack in 5 speed?

iv developed a jerk in all gears when i speed shift. when i shift and then hit the throttle there is a very strong jerk there. is it just the tolerances that need to be set or do i need a new tranny? im looking to start big time bombing so should i just go with a six speed and a real good clutch. Plus i hate that huge gap between 3rd and 4th.[yuk] thanks oh and how much would a good used six speed cost. where can i get one?

As far as a used transmission these guys are pretty good and can ship anywhere.

I won a 6 speed off ebay from vegas I no longer want it, I want better milage and I thought the 6 speed had a bettert overdrive gear so I think I would be better with a splitter and I have not figured out economical shipping or paid for it yet I won it for $1500 it came out of a 2001 with 56000 miles pm me if interested

If you have developed excessive slack from speed shifting the NV4500 HD, do not choose a NV5600 as a replacement. It has even more moving mass and will disintegrate after about the third speed shift.

It is best to let these light truck transmissions shift reasonably slowly, or they will tear themselves up.

What do you mean by reasonably slowly? Use the clutch?

Lambo May 17, 2004 09:14 PM

slower?

what do you mean by shift slower? im not going to use the clutch and thats that.[yuk] i dont think the slack was cause by me, it was like that when i got it and iv put 15,000 on it. does anywhere rebuild trannys to make then stronger? Ex: stronger synchronizers. thanks.

Sounds like you contradicted yoself. It is quite possible that the jerk is caused by the slackness in your drive train.

why would you not use the clutch ?? sounds like a good way to go through a bunch of trannys

Good question. I always use the clutch as its an easy thing to do. I sometimes dont use it if I am shifting into neutral when coming to a stoplight. I keep a very slight pressure on the shifter and when the rpm come down to idle rpm it slides out of gear into neutral.

Well maybe he is used to constant mesh transmissions like in road tractors. people sometimes use clutchless shifting in these trucks. It is not a recommend practice. But it is your truck and you guys can drive them anyway you want.
