Should I just watch the voltmeter to see when my alt is going to crap out?

Should I just watch the voltmeter to see when my alt is going to crap out?

I had a voltmeter on it yesterday with the headlights and wipers on I was @ 14.0 and with the heat on full blast it was @ 13.8... a volt or so low... should I be prepared or not sweat it?

I was trying to trace my headlight flickering problem...

Terminals are clean, new batteries (Optimas)... wiring looks good...

I'm assuming its the alt.

14 volts at idle is pretty good. Have you tried replacing the brushes? Check out Larry B's. He has replacement brushes at a good price.

I would guess you have a headlight swtich or headlight relay problem.

Thanks...

A headlight switch could cause that?

You have a part # or price?

Put the brushes in your glove box. That way it's garanteed you won't need them.

There is no relay in the headlight circuit (but it is a good idea to put one in there), so I would suspect either a bad switch or something in the headlight wiring.
The first thing I would look for is a bad ground. Check out fostertruck.com for the brushes. Are you sure the flickering is not your heater grid kicking on and off? KD
