Shifting transfer case to 4 low hard
I usually get a lot of "gear grinding," when I try to shift into 4 low. Even if transmission is in neutral. My normal procedure is usually shift to 4wd then put transmission in neutral. Then shut off the motor and shift into low. Then restart motor and put in gear. What is causing all this extra motion I have to do?

If an auto try to do the shift to low in park.
If it does not grind then your tranny drags a bit, transferring a bit of power when there should be only free wheeling.
Causes can be warped steel plates, incorrect end play adjustment during rebuild and misadjusted shifter linkage.
You also need to do the shift rather quickly instead of lingering in neutral, because even a good auto transmission will accelerate the output shaft in neutral if there is no load on it, like when being in neutral. (EG somethin like a pulling force of 1 pound on the wheels in automatic N and transfer gear in L will accelerate the output shaft briskly if the transfer case is in N)

Even in neutral, the guts of an automatic are still turning.
