Re:Shift Kit or not?

Oh I have found a couple who say they work. Now I am just trying to make sure I pick the right one to do the work.

heavyg:

Welcome to the website!!

I don't know what transmission shop you went to but
they are giving you bad information! I agree with what
"pappyman" has already told you.

I have a 96' 12 valve that I bought new. Shortly after
purchasing the truck, I had a "Trans Go Shift Kit" installed
on the truck. My "stock" line pressures were pretty low
(about 50-55) and the shift kit "raised" these pressures
up to around 65-70 at idle. The shifts were firmer and the
transmission performed much better especially when towing
my racing trailer. At that time I was running a TST #6 cam
plate and my P7100 pump was set to the "high side" of the
specs. Rear wheel horespower was 225, torque 625 on a
Mustang Dynamometer. I ran this combination for 98,000
miles with no problems at all with the transmission!!

IMHO, I think a shift kit or complete valve body will help
your transmission very much, especially if you plan to do
any BOMBING to the truck!

However, find a transmission shop that knows what
they are doing and have them "set" your pressures
to what the manafacturer recommends.

Hope this has helped you some! Good luck!

-------
John_P
Re:Shift Kit or not?

Heavyg,

I also have a Trans-go shift kit and have found it to definately firm up the shifts. I had mine installed by a local "CTD expert shop" and have had some problems with it. They have it set a 103psi idle ! I've just about eliminated all of the limp mode problems and think if I lower the pressure down to mid 90's it may be all set. If I were to do it again, I'd get a VB from DTT or alike and install it myself. It would probably cost about the same as having a tranny shop install a shift kit.

Just my $0.02

Re:Shift Kit or not?

HELLO If I understand it right DTT won't sell you a VB or TC you must be one of there afilliated installers. I just talked to them today an thats the impression I get. Since the shop they recomend for the job in my area can't do it (or won't) they say the next closest one to get it done at is about 400 miles away in Mass. I don't mind traveling some but I'm thinking of just getting a whole trans an everything set up for towing from Phoenix hard parts, good price too. Even with shipping, anyone know about these people.

I haven't heard any complaints about Dave Goerend's Transmissions. I emailed him with some questions and he answered right away, on a Sunday morning no less. He's in Iowa. Here's the website. Goerend

Re:Shift Kit or not?

I have the Phoenix hard parts upgraded tranny it has the low stall TC and the trans-go shift kit they dyno the tranny before shipping and set the pressures...I didnt need a hot rod tranny just a good working tranny that would hold my HP and Torque at a reasonable cost...so far no troubles with it shifts are firm and O/D lockup is smooth and positive...cost about $1700.00 plus shipping and core charge

Deezilla:

You can also get a complete custom valve body from
Scheid Diesel (Effingham). They can set the valve body
up with the higher pressures for you. Give Brian or Rick
a call at Scheid Diesel (Effingham) @ 1-800-669-1934.

-------
John_P

Cant remember the name on the TC box now...but it was heavy and billet...it was built by another company I had to wait for that to come in before they shipped my tranny a...as far as hold back I cant really say its more or less without an exhaust brake
