Replacing valve seals and springs - cyl #6 scares me!!!
I have a new set of Cummins valve seals (pretty sure mine are leaking) and a set of 60lb valve springs that I'm picking up after work today. I plan on installing them as soon as possible, but the part that concerns me is cylinder number 6! Being under the cowl, is it possible to even get a spring compressor in there?
I'm wondering if I even have enough clearance to do so with both motor mounts removed and the engine sitting on the cross member. Anybody done this job with the engine in the truck on a 2nd gen?

piece of cake..I got the spring tool from genos (well worth it)and it was very simple no need to worry....and think of it this way...by the time you get there you will be good with the tool from the first 5, by number 6 you are a pro
Make sure you have a strong magnet to catch the retainers!

Well I wanna work on it tonight, but I just got an idea. I have the below spring compressor, and I'm going to cut off the handle and weld on a nut to turn with a gear wrench. We'll see if that gives me enough room. Wish me luck!

I did mine with the compressor you posted the pic of. Worked ok. ( I might have used a vise grip on the tool on the back one to help compress the spring as that star shaped handle sucks. Worse thing was keeping track of the keepers. If I ever do it again i gonna track done a few of them so if i drop one outside the engine I dont have to hunt for it. Lay red shop rags on top the head to avoid dropping one in the engine.(cover oil drainback holes etc.) Good Luck.

Well I did it and it worked flawlessly! I got all the seals and springs replaced, and now I'm about to do the final valve adjustment this morning to get it all buttoned up.
I wasn't worried about wrecking the valve spring compressor, as it was only $20, and I usually use my C-clamp style compressor that can only be used when the head is removed. I'm very happy with how it turned out.
