removing the pre filter

removing the pre filter
I have had the pre filter off in the past, but this time the 17 mm hex is rounded off.

Dosen't the pre filter come off with the lift pump?

Why are these nessesary? The 1st gens do not have them!

As long as the tank filter is doing it's job I don't see any need for the prefilter.
It's only function is to protect the lift pump from damaging debris.
