Rear axle seal question

Is there an inner axle oil seal on a d70 (obviously rear) axle?

I've got diff fluid leaking from the tubes of my d70 and contaminating the rear drums/brake shoes. I know there is an oil seal on the inside of each hub- easy fix. I couldn't find an inner seal on the crappy exploded axle diagram I found online and I'm guessing there isn't one in a rear. anyone know for sure if if there is an inner seal too?

Anyone got a good exploded diagram?

Thanks. the axle is a '96 D70 outta a Dodge 2500 CTD now in my '98.

It doesn't take long, you just need to get the right socket for the axle nut... its like 2 5/8 or something. Be sure you get the WHOLE locking pin off of the shaft or you will be looking for a new nut (like I did). I got 2 seals for something around $12 at salvo.

Great. Thanks guys. I already have the spindle nut socket. The mechanic who failed me for state inspection insisted that there was an inner axle seal. I'd never found an inner seal in a rear d44 or d60 and definately didn't remember noticing anything when I replaced the carrier and gears but that was a while ago. He was so insistant that I wanted to be sure.

thanks again

Maybe he was considering that to be the inner seal and the axle shaft to be the outer seal? Kinda sketchy.

Going by the book my Napa guys gave me the wrong seal.
They asked me to bring in the the brake drum, with a couple of measurements they pulled out the right one.
Apparently there is more than one size seal.

I have 13" x 3" drums. What rear seal part number would I use from NAPA?

Think you said this is a 94?

Anyway, if it is an Auto, it should be a 70U, rear brakes should be 13 X 2-1/2, Rock shows National 417158, ID is 2.875, OD is 3.881 for a bore of 3.875 and is .375 wide. If it is a stick, it should be an 80, and the brakes are listed as 13 X 3-1/2", that seal shows as a National 455086, ID is 3" OD is 4.254 housing bore is 4.249 and width is .468.

I would just about bet you have a 70U.

Johnh,
Thanks for the reply. Mine is a 94 manual with 2 1/2" wide shoes. Napa is the only major auto store near me.
