Angry pump timing geat help.......!!!!!!

I worked on my timing for 2 days now. I finally got it figured out how to do this by doing it 20 times.... I over checking everything, Anyhow I got it back together and went to rev it and it slipped timing.

I checked everything out again and it seems that the pump gear is not on tight..

I don't understand why it does not move on the shaft much. When I torque it the nut seems to take all the pressure and not the gear itself. When i go to take it off it comes off with very little effort.

I do not understand why this is happening. Is there something I am missing?

To me it should slip on the shaft more. Anybody know?

thanks Joe

Just put a new pump on my '94, and had to recheck a couple times to make sure every thing was at TDC. The nut comes off fairly easily, put you should still have to pull the gear off w/a puller. The pump shaft and gear should be completely free of oil before you assemble and torque, or else it will slip. Torque on the nut is about 125 ft/lbs IIRC, I can look it up if you need.

Thumbs up

Well guys thanks for the info. It just did not seem right so I took the whole front cover off. I cleaned the shaft and gear and tried it again. Seems better then before.

I did try this with the cover on but still to much oil I guess. Atleast now I now how easily the timing can slip.

Thanks for the info

Well I wished I told you the rest of the story now.On my 94 which I used f/pulling I had that problem of it slipping & when I pulled the pump I ran some emery (220 grit)parallel w/the pump shaft thinking it slips on the smooth shaft & it hasn't slipped since.

Make sure you use Electrical contact cleaner, and a NEW lock washer.
The sand paper is a very good idea, if the whole front cover is off.
I just helped a buddy of mine with his, and we ended up timing it like 4 or 5 times. Leave everything hooked up so you know the Pump isnt turning when you pull the gear.
Our local shop acctually told us to use RED loctite, and ditch the lockwasher. Did that on mine, and its working fine. Did it on my budds.... not so much.

Once the gear is loose on the shaft, lift it up with one of the 8mm bolts you used to pulled it with, so you can clean the shaft and the bore of the gear well. I use contact cleaner. When you get the pump where you want it, push the gear one. I get a bigger socket (32mm), put it against the gear and give it a rap with a dead blow hammer to seat it on the shaft. Install nut and washer, torque up. Spec is 144 ft-lbs, I go to 180. I reuse the washer, no loctite, no issues.

I think since I have the cover off I am going to use something to rough it up some so it will seat better. I am going to try n get some contact cleaner also.

I wish there was a way to use a keyway to help....

You need the lockwasher as a spacer, the threads dont go all the way down on the shaft because of the taper.

I even tried it with and without the washer. Yes you need the washer because of the space. the nut only goes so far.

Rough surfaces promote galling, which will prevent your timing from slipping, but causes damage to the surfaces, and makes changing anything later on much more difficult. Clean, smooth, DRY shaft and bore is what you want.
