Potentiometer Fix!!!

I had a couple questions for this fix...I wanted to bring my questions over to the right forum for us 2nd gen folks. Anyone done this fix? How long has it been working for you? Any problems (cruise control, OD switch??). Also, does it have to be a 5000 ohm? If it were a 10,000 ohm would it mess up the signal?[duhhh] Would a rheostat basically function in the same manner?
