Pinhole fuel leak behind the filter housing
 

Anyone have an IPB of this area? While troubleshooting a charging issue today, I noticed fuel spraying from behind the filter housing. Upon closer inspection, it is coming from a rubber line just behind the housing, by the block.
Is there a specific part I need, or just fuel injection rated hose? How far back does the hose go?

Without seeing which one, I would guess fuel return line, goes behind the filter to a short steel line coming from the IP. Get 5/16" Diesel rated line, goes from the IP to a quick connect under the truck, drives side floorboard. It is kind of a goofy factory lone, quick connect to braided, then a short steel IIRC, then to the rubber that is leaking. While you are there, you might also want to change the 3/8" feed line running right next to it.

Yup, return line. Thats why they die too is the heat from between the head, block and fuel filter just bakes the rubber till it cracks. Mine typically last only a few years. Easier to do when you do a filter change too. ;)

That's a pretty genius design...

This one has lasted at least seven years, as that is how long I have had it. It's about time for a filter change anyway, so I might as well.

Thank us after you fight to get the lines changed.. My meathooks have some problems navigating around there to get a good grab of the hose. And I've done it a few times on mine and other trucks. [laugh]

You''ll need about 2' of 5/16 hose and two hose clamps.
If you're smart you'll buy enough hose to run all the way to the tank and replace the supply line all the way too.
Avoid future problems with the entire prone to fail stock fuel supply/return system.

That was a whole lot of fun... I got the hose out, but decided it was too dark to put the new hose in. A 9/32 socket works much better than a flathead screwdriver... [roll]

I am going to run the new hose from the IP to the steel line on the frame, below the cab. I have six feet of marine grade diesel line, so that should do the trick.

Done. Had to replace the starter, too. Alternator, fuel line and starter in the same weekend. At least it's working right now.
