Quite possibly it could be causing your condition, and the best fix I have found is a draw straw from Vulcan, or the rebuilt module from Dodge ( changed to plastic )

Anything you patch the rust with will be temporary, trust me.

I would go the vulcan draw straw way. I did that on a previous truck I had. It was simple easy to install and worked great.

I fixed my pinhole leak with a big glob JB Weld. I firgured it would be temporary, but it's held for over a year now.

Good post since I currently live in the desert, but am planning to go to Alaska and mine isn't rusted yet! I'll definitely have to protect the top of my fuel tank with something......silicone rubber?

I would say just keep it clean. Mine rotted out cause there was dirt and mud on top of the tank against the lines.

Totally agree.
In my parts everyone lives on a dirt road.
Every time I work on a tank it has at least four inches of mud on top of it that speeds rust.
A forgotten place to keep clean by most folks.
